The movie Avatar is the top grossing movie of all time . but also it has a theme of imperialism! the theme of the movie is like the theme of pocohantas but in a cooler way- that technology and humans want to take over the native peoples land. they think they can do this becuase they think they are stonger then the other people. in avatar the humans go to a planet named pandora and they want to take the land where the native alien guys live because they live on rich land. the movie portrays it in a way where it makes the humans look like they have no right to do this but this is the same thing America has done when it invades countries for reasons like sugar. some people might think its awesome but the country that it invades has an 100 percent different view of it and says we are the bad guys. its the same thing as avatar. if in the movie the alien guys attacked the humans for there space ships and hellicopters it would have been a tottaly different movie in the way of the movies perspective would have been the humans are the good guys and the aliens are crazy. and becuase the aliens had a less advantage over the humans so it would be the weaker attacking the stronger wich would never happen in real world like what if south africa tried to take over america, it would be impossible then we would have a big war with south africa and we would win, so it would just be a big mess for south Africa. so in order to be imperialist you have to have enough power already to get more power. only the big countries have the power to expand.

invasion of kuwait

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasion_of_Kuwait

in 1990 iraq invaded its neighboring country of Kuwait. They did it for two reasons: economic and political. First, economic: Iraq was almost bankrupt and needed money. Kuwait is very rich and has a lot of oil. Iraq was mad at Kuwait for charging less for oil and was then making a lot more money selling oil than Iraq which was hurting Iraq's economy. Second, the political reason was Iraq said Kuwait wasn't really a country--that Great Britian had wrongly created it after World War II. Iraq said Kuwait was part of their kingdom in ancient and modern times and belonged to them. So Sadaam Hussein, the leader of Iraq then tried to enlarge the political boundaries of Iraq to make his country stronger and the leader in the middle east.

So in August 1990, Iraq bombed Kuwait and moved more than 30,000 troops into the country to try to take them over. Saddam Hussein was the leader of Iraq then and it was part of his plan to be imperialistic--to use military power to take over another country. Iraq was stronger in their military and would have been able to win if the US hadn't blocked the invasion later.

soa

According to that one sided argument on what is the soa? it talked about how trained latin-american soldiers have raped, assasinated, dissapeared, massacred, and forced into refugee, hundreds of thousand latins amercans. so obviously after reading that, it seams like the worst organization ever. so if that is all it really does then no way should america be able to run organizations lieke this. but i cant even believe this being true, i would guess it does some good thing aswell that the article doesnt talk about like maybe helps prevent us from getting bombed, that would definetly be a plus! this article smells a little bit like yellow journalism to me. making this organzation sound worse then it really is to get it banned

yellow journalism

PANIC TIME FOR HEAT

this was the headline for a miami newspaper 3 days ago after the miami heat got off to a 5-4 start in the NBA. this is a form of yellow journalism because yellow journalism basically means making an issue bigger than it really is. this relates to the miami heat story because in the offseason lebron james the worlds best basketball player left clevland to
take his talents to south beach
and so did another allstar chris bosh. so the media went crazy around this story and were giving this team so much hype and everyone saying there going to win the championship. but in reality this team has only been together for a few months before the opening game and the supporting cast around wade, bosh, james are really nobody. so the media named this work in progress team a championship team before they played one game. then 9 games into the season theyre 5-4 wich is not a bad record at all they have one of the best records in the eastern conference and the media is saying its already panic time!?
yellow journalism happens all the time in sports though to name a couple other instances-- the tiger woods incedent, barry bonds steroids,- most instances where yellow journalism is used its based around a controvery-something bad over something really good because people think thats a little more interesting like in the news they say
if it bleads it leads
as in a guy kills another guy is alot bigger of a story than a women wins $50436587357895 in the lottery

blogging 2

i agree with the blogging assesment system in this class to an extent(sorry to take the middle position) i believe that the blogs were a good way to review the things we have learned over that week and you probbly gained knowledge by doing them but i dont think they should count so much to your grade i just went on the school website to check the grade and i counted 17/22 grades for this class were blog post so only 5 things that were graded we did in class and 2 of those were test so it seems like in this class you are either going to do really well or bad if you dont do blog post your going to have a very bad grade but even if you did all your blogs and did bad on the 2 test they kind of cancel each other out. this grading system will most likely be the reason for me getting 6 A's and a B on this marking periods report card and that B being in history. im not saying its all the grading systems fault because thats not true at all i still could have done better on the other assignments but thats besides the point. overall what im trying to say is that the blogs were a good idea and different but it should be balanced with the work we do in class to make it fully effective. i do think the blogs were a good way to learn things though instead of just hearing a teacher tell you all the answers

blogging

blogging was no dought a lot different then just pen and paper but it was deffinetly a lot more work. its almost like we had history twice , one during the school day and one at home while writing the blogs because with some blogs i had to do some research in order to give correct information. but also with the blogs i think it helped understand the topics better because i really had to think hard sometimes and i was thinking of things that i forgot i even knew sounds kind of crazy but its true. and while reading these blogs i was reviewing everything i had learned in class that weak and to things i have learned in previous social studies classes. so overall the blogs were more work but i got more knowledge by doing them

favorite

my favorite blog toppic this marking period was the post about amnesty because its such a crazy concept but its not talked about to much. the civil war was one of the biggest events in american history and i learn about it every year in social studies but ive never even heard of this. also amnesty seems to have been the perfect ending to the war. it was an absolutely brilliant idea by abraham lincoln

ellis island

Thier were definetly mixed emoitions on the journey over here to america. mostly they would have been excited for a new life and opportunities in america and leaving troubled Europe. but they also had to have been nervous. there were lots of risk involved like the journey over here was very risky because the boat was packed of different people who possibly could have diseases and it was a long boat ride over here and it would have been very unconfortable. seconed they dont know too much about america besides what they have heard from other people and theres no security that when you get over here youll be able to get a good enough job to support you and your family.

but they probably werent thinking about this too much they were thinking america is this incredible new land and europe has famines, high taxes, wars, and disease, so we should go over there. They were often preceded by family members who wrote letters saying how much better things were here. Some may have had unrealistic expectations like the streets were paved with gold, and others may have been discriminated against because of their nationality, but most still found it much better than their home countries. Arriving at Ellis Island would have been an exciting time for the immigrants starting a new life.

protest in song

well obviously working in a factory in this time was noo good for the workers. in the song of the shirt he described all the bad stuff he goes through at work. he repeats the phrase "ork, work , work" a couple of times meaning all he does is work and through the song he goes through all the things he expierences while at work like he says work work work till his brain begins to swim and with fingers weary and worn, with eye lids heavy and red . like this is crazy stuff. all this "technology" was new too them so they didnt really know how to handle all of it. they had no labor laws or no safety codes soo not a good time. he wrote it in a form of protest which i think is interesting but it wont do anything unless he gets a bunch of his friends to protest with him and with these working conditions it probably wouldnt be too hard to get people to protest with you. i also think its interesting because people still protest in thier lyrics like in the 80's and 90's rap groups lie N.W.A. made a career by writing songs about protest about how blacks are treated and how they feel about the police and the greatest rap song of all time Fight The Power by Public Enemy is about how they arent happy with america but a lot of famous songs through out history were about how the artist wasnt happy about something. but people have been doing this forever, before recording studios and record deals.

hollywood cowboys

I dont know too much about John Wayne and his western movies but i know that hollywood doesnt care all that much about historical history. There main goal is to make money and to do that they need to make the best possible movies. so if they think in a movie, twisting the facts around would make it more interesting and enjoyable then why not but they cant twist the facts around too much then it will become unrealistic and unenjoyable so they have to meet somewhere halfway. sometimes a movie will make a side story around the historical event like in Titanic, the ship really exsisted and stuff but they made up this plot to go along with it ,as in there wasnt really a Jack and Rose they just add it make the story more interesting. i bet most if not all movies about historical events (besides documentaries) add hollywood elements to it like dramatize it or add more action/comedy to the event to make it better. this almost ties in with stereotypes that people think of cowboys as being a heroic figure when in reality there just cattlemen but the idea of a hero is a lot greater snd everyone goes a long with it like kids are cowboys for halloween but they dont know they dressed as person not to different from a farmer.

that picture up there is of an actuall cowboy. in the picture he is doing his actuall job. yeah it looks a lot better in the moview where he has wearing an awesome cowboy hat and a gun in his hand and instead of hurding cows he's chasing after indians or other rival cowboys. cowboys were just normal people living in a crazy time in america where their wasnt much law and everyone was homesteading. some cowboys were like how they are in the movies though some were gunmen or lawmen and some were outlaws but i guarantee every other race or culture also had people that were gunmen lawmen and outlaws. its just something about the cowboys that makes them more interesting then everyone else but i cant tell what but i get it though for some reason the cowboys do seam more awesome then everyone else and that why they have this heroic figure to them in the movies.

learning in gaming

i think learning and gaming can connect i actually think gaming can be a great way of learning some games are more information then others like the oregan trail was informational you were playing a game based off a true event i actually learned facts while playing that game. with other games like video games for the xbox or playstation i bet everyone learns something from every game they play weather they realize it or not. for example i.e the game madden a football game while your playing that your learning all the players names on all the teams and also learning football plays and terms another example would be a millitary game while playing it your learning about THE MILLITARY like the guns they use or some tactics some millitary games are based around historical wars like world war 2 and while playing the game your also learning some facts which could be useful at some point. so overall gaming can be a great way to learn its different and most high schoolers like to play games so theyll haave fun while learning which i believe will be very effective and maybe even learn better that way instead of learning everything from reading and listening. these blogs are a different way of learning aswell - just thought i would add that

rocky racoon

the song rocky racoon by the beatles has a wild west theme to it . its about a man rocky racoon and another guy stole his girl, he is not really mad and upset at this other guy, dan. so it eventually leads up to a showdown and dan shot first. this song actually historically accurate to an extent like i dought this is how all problems were resolved back then but there is a reason the wild west was called the WILD west. crazy things were happening like showdowns where men would have gun battles like described in the song. but in this time period there was loose laws, everything was untamed, people were still fighting over territories which seems to be to most prized possesion of the time. so this song by the greatest band of all time has historical accuracy about it they most likely didnt do it on purpose they probably did it off a stereotype in there mind that back then everyone had showdowns and stuff but theres truth in every stereotype so these crazy things really did happen its just more exagerated today

reconstruction vs civil rights

african americans in reconstruction and african american during the civil rights movement were verry different situations but not to different in the way they were treated. the reconstruction was the time after the civil war around the time of the 1860s when the war had just ended and slavery had just been abolished. even though slavery was abolished the slaves werent equal to everyone else and most white people were still really racist. so they put up black codes the intent of the black codes were to keep the freed slaves in a state similar to slavery. the black codes restricted what they could and could not do like blacks couldnt vote even though the 15 amendment says any male can vote they also couldnt hold office, own property, enter some towns with out permission and couldnt intermarry. in 1875 the southern democrats went farther then black codes and made racial segregation which caused schools, hospitals, busses and restraunts to be segregated even though there were already laws against segegation. so overall the african amercians after slavery was abolished they still found ways to mantain white supremecy with loop holes like black codes to keep a slavery like state so the blacks were free but not absolutely free.
the civil rights happened 100 years later

lincolns assasination

This is a picture of the assasination of abraham lincoln. this was what abraham lincoln got in return after he abolished slavery and restored the union which were the two biggest problems at the time and on top of this he had the hardest job in the world. he took many risk as president wich more than likely is what lead to his assasination but almost everything big you do requires some type of risk. like going to war basically against his own country but it something had to be done and he had a verry good reason for going to war but people didnt like it. with out lincoln usa might not be what it is today . john wilks booth may have killed the most influential man in the history of the united states

amnesty

The north granted amnesty to the south after the war was over. which means the north forgave the south for everything they did. this is a huge thing to give forgivness to compared to now a days where people dont forgive eachother after a little fight nevertheless killing thousand of eachothers men. its almost like the leader of the bloods going to the crips and saying ill forget about all are problems and all of the members you kiled but the bloods and crips never got to the point of a war like the north and south did .the north gave amnesty to a war !wich is the biggest conflict there can be between to sides. But lincolns main purpose of the war was to restore the united states wich basically means they were fighting for peace wich are complete oppisates. but it seems as they almost had too give amnesty to make the war a complete success even though they already won the battle. if they didnt grant amnesty then the war wouldnt have done anythng except to deterimine if the north or south had the better millitary. if they didnt grant amnesty the south most likely would have been just as mad as before if not even more because now there embarresed they lost. but since they did grant amnesty it gave a chance for the north and south to be united again as the united states of america wich we still are today.

stereotypes

stereotypes are so widely known in our society today by so many people because theres some truth behind all the stereotypes im pretty sure a stereotype didnt start by a guy just randomly saying white men cant jump or black men cant swim .but but saying white men or black men your refering to ALL the peope of that race, religion, gender or whatever the stereotype may be. like women cant drive...im posititve there are some excellent women drivers out there( not including danica patrick who has done nothing in her career of hype) but then there are most likely a ton of bad women drivers and thats where the stereotype comes from. if we are talking about slavery and the civil war then theres stereotypes like white people are better the blacks or even the joke what do you call a black person with a palm leaf......antique air conditions. These things had happened more the 100 years ago are still coming up as sterotypes even thoug most of them arent true anymore. theyre still looked at that way. so overall a sterotype has truth behing it but most of the time not true

lincolns focus

Lincolns concern was more on preserving the union then slavery because slavery was mostly taking place in the union so if you didnt preserve the union he would have no power on slavery. if the union had successfully succeeded theyd be there own country. so in modern day it be like Obama telling the prime minister of canada to make all the canadiens to speak english. and primeminister would just be like noooooooo, who do think you are . or something like that. it doesnt really work that way. overall lincols was basically taking steps 1 preserve union ,then if that works2 we will then abolish slavery. you just cant do it the other way. trying to abolish slavery before preserving the reunion is like......trying to abolish slavery before preserving the union. theres really no better analogy than that.

"step on one bug and the internet isnt invented"-hot tub time machine

of course history matters. anything that has previously happened is history and things that happend in the past creates the present. so during the civil war what would have happend if the south won, that would more than likely have a big effect on present day. what if we never won freedom over brittan -- i might not even be hear today. what if my great grandparents never came over from ireland and germany-- i Definetly wouldnt be hear. these are all things that happend throughout history to make today.. one little thing someone does or doesnt do tomorow could impact the rest of their life and other peoples

10 x 10= 110

we should change the way we teach younger kids the history of america. my whole life i thought christopher columbus was the first man to find america and jackie robinson was the first black baseball player. until last week when mr meechin told me they werent a long with a bunch of other lies we have been told. but what if no one ever told me these we all lies then i would never know.. the teachers have been giving out false information , it be like having ou math teacher telling you 10 x 10 = 110.i bet over 3/4 of america think those lies are true. if someone came up to me in the street and they were like hey max ill give you $20 if you answer this question right and they say who was the first black baseball player to play proffesionally and i said jackie robinson i wonder if he would say that was correct or he would said no there were others before him... i guess it would depened if he was ever taught what the things he was taught earlier were lies.
